The Conjuring franchise has cemented itself as one of the most iconic names in modern horror, blending supernatural terrors with real-life paranormal cases investigated by Ed and Lorraine Warren. With The Conjuring: Last Rites (2025), director Michael Chaves steps in once again to guide the long-running series toward a chilling finale.
Released on September 5, 2025, the ninth installment draws its inspiration from the infamous Smurl haunting of Pennsylvania, once again grounding its scares in real-life lore. The film reunites Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as the Warrens, with Mia Tomlinson and Ben Hardy joining the cast as Judy Warren and her love interest, Tony Spera.
A Dark Tale Rooted in Faith and Family
The story opens in 1964, as Lorraine Warren suffers a terrifying vision involving a mysterious mirror and her unborn daughter. The unsettling imagery sets the stage for what comes decades later, when the Smurl family begins to experience a wave of violent paranormal activity. From phantom voices to malicious attacks, the disturbances all seem to emanate from an antique mirror given as a family gift.
As the haunting intensifies, the Smurls are left desperate and vulnerable—drawn into the Warren family’s orbit when Judy’s own psychic abilities begin to emerge. The film carefully weaves together the Warrens’ personal struggles with the Smurls’ plight, culminating in a harrowing face-off against a demonic force bound to the cursed mirror.
The climactic battle blends prayer, faith, and raw determination in true Conjuring fashion, with the Warrens and Judy fighting side by side. In a bittersweet epilogue, the Warrens finally secure the cursed object in their occult museum, a stark reminder of the dangers they’ve spent their lives confronting.
Star Power and Returning Faces
Alongside Wilson and Farmiga’s now-iconic portrayals, the film features newcomers and legacy characters. Mia Tomlinson shines as Judy, embodying a mix of vulnerability and strength as she wrestles with her psychic inheritance. Ben Hardy’s Tony Spera adds heartfelt grounding to Judy’s arc, particularly as the story draws toward their wedding.
Horror fans will also delight in cameos that honor the franchise’s history. Familiar faces—including Carolyn Perron from the first film, Janet Hodgson from the sequel, and David Glatzel from The Devil Made Me Do It—reappear during Judy’s wedding sequence, offering a poignant nod to the Warrens’ past battles. Even James Wan, the creator of the Conjuring Universe, makes a hidden cameo.
Production and Direction
Michael Chaves, already a seasoned hand within the franchise, approached Last Rites as both a continuation and a conclusion. Building on the foundation laid by screenwriters Ian Goldberg, Richard Naing, and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, Chaves crafts an atmosphere heavy with dread but grounded in human emotion.
Filmed in London through late 2024, the production aimed to create a sense of finality without losing the essence that made the series so effective. Adding to that sense of closure is Benjamin Wallfisch’s haunting score, which replaces Joseph Bishara’s earlier compositions. Wallfisch’s music leans heavily on dissonance and tension, underscoring the supernatural presence throughout.
Box Office and Reception
Despite immense anticipation, The Conjuring: Last Rites faced a mixed response. While it opened strongly—bringing in $30 million on its first day—it ultimately struggled at the domestic box office, grossing just $8 million against its hefty production budget of $55 million by its second week.
Critics were divided. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a 55% rating, while Metacritic’s average score sits at 54, both reflecting its polarizing impact. Some praised its emotionally charged storytelling and chilling set pieces, while others felt the franchise may have lost some of its freshness after nearly a decade of spin-offs and sequels. Audience polls, however, revealed stronger enthusiasm, with CinemaScore granting it a solid “B” grade and PostTrak showing 60% of viewers recommending it.
A Closing Chapter
Whether or not The Conjuring: Last Rites satisfies every fan, it undeniably marks the end of an era. By tying in decades of cases, legacy characters, and the Warrens’ enduring faith, the film closes with a mix of horror and heart.
As Ed and Lorraine share their last dance, reflecting on a life spent battling darkness together, audiences are reminded that the true power of the Conjuring saga has always been its family bond at the center of the supernatural storms. More than demons or cursed relics, it was always about love and belief standing against the unknown.
